Recycle upcycle

May 29, 2009

Eco-consciousness is everywhere these days. But is it really? A lot of things are supposedly “green” but sadly end up being the same old same old. Only, with a fancier name and price tag to match.  On the other hand, there are some companies who do take the time and put forth the effort to make something truly eco-conscious. Unfortunately, some, when it comes to wearable items may compromise on comfort or style. Enter Linkskin.com

truly green (not just greenwashed):

Every effort has been made to produce a truly green product from the materials used to the manufacturing process itself, down to the distribution to the end user. In fact once you have decided to change style, just bring your old linkskin frames back to us and Linkskin will recycle them.

A few quick things to know about Linkskin:

construction – ultra lightweight flexible screwless, solderless design

materials – recycled-recyclable materials such as polycarbonate waste from prescription lens manufacturing, recycled stainless steel; all colors and coatings are  RoHs certified free of hazardous substances, innovative recycled plastic case/work of art

carbon footprint – solderless design (welding/soldering produces harmful emissions) They only have scheduled shipments.

style – amazing, colorful, sporty, wearable, comfortable, smart, stylish

Reasons it fits you:

Visitors to Bellingham/Whatcom county are struck by the fact that this is one of the most gorgeous areas of the world.  This awe has prompted many to not just move here, but try to preserve the beauty that we have.  A1 builders, and other green building pioneers spent years creating the change in the construction industry we see today. Educating people and supplying some of the greenest and stylish buildings in the area. This eco-conciousness has prompted many to seek ways to create a smaller carbon footprint in their day to day lives. Now you can do it with your glasses, without sacrificing style.

Whether you are mountain/road biking the sleek temples will fit securely and comfortably to your head under your helmet. While kayaking the hypoallergenic materials will not be harmed by the saltwater.

Even if the only extreme activity you engage in is sitting at Village Books reading with a steaming latte in hand, your new ultra lightweight and comfortable eyewear will draw complements on your savvy stylishness, and for those in the know, tiny footprint.

In case you have not been in lately, we are now carrying the fabulous French line Anne et Valentin. Beautiful and very wearable shapes and colors to complement your personality. Here is a smattering:

Some updates to our fun line up include:

Thank You Face a Face and Salt Optics.

I must say I love the Salt Optics frames they have just the right mix of classic styling with sleek modern sensibility.

let me know what you think.

In addition to the eyewear we have on display stuff for you to just look too. On display right now is work from local artist Karl Reid. My favourite is the bear paw print stone sculpture. We will have that and some of his paintings on display. I will keep you posted as to any developments.

Here is a link to his blog.karlreidartist.wordpress.com.

I love the sales racks. The hunt is part of what makes shopping fun. So, in addition to the latest, gorgeous, styles we have coming in, there is the clearance table. You will find Major brand names like Oliver Peoples for 60% off. And some of the legendary handmade european eyewear for 40%-50% off.

We are also expecting in more great eyewear and sunglasses from Salt Optics. Salt Optics handmade eyewear is very comfortable to wear. Think your favorite pair of jeans or sweater kind of comfort. But with classic styling and uncompromissing optics, you can wear these glasses anywear and turn heads.

Another name to watch (or should I say hear?) is Alice Russell. She is described as “Music that tugs at the emotions and raises hairs on the back of the neck. You really can’t fake what Miss. Russell’s got!” this is very true. I can’t say it any better than her web site. -

“Alice Russell has gained an enviable reputation as one of the hottest singers in the UK right now. Her tracks with the Quantic and Quantic Soul Orchestra projects helped elevate her profile further. Alice’s lavishly soulful voice is both timeless and up to the minute modern. Live or on record, she always performs with her trademark self assurance and sass. Her style is a predominantly bluesy, soul lament but encompasses everything from funk to gospel to jazz and beyond. Her performances captivate the audience and command its attention.”

I say, she is rather good.

Hurry On

For those of you who haven’t heard of Bittersweet by name, you have probably heard them either on tv or in random places as that catchy, playful, “didn’t-I-hear-this-in-a-Sean Connery-flick” kind of music. Anyway, they are out with their new album entitled “Drama” on the quango label. I am sure you can buy it at your local music store (or online. Granted you are reading this blog…)
